Do you want to experience Rotterdam Art Week at its best? Then we have mapped out a fun walking route for you, which will lead you past all kinds of fun indoor and outdoor art. Read on quickly!
From 27 to 30 March, you can follow this art walk from 11:00, when all indoor locations are open. A relaxed way to discover the city and the art scene. Our tip: start at Rotterdam Central Station, because you can pick up a free map at Rotterdam Tourist Information.
The route starts at the front of the station, near the Rotterdam Tourist Information kiosk. Here you walk outside and turn right, to the Groothandelsgebouw, where special, colourful works of art by Miranda Schellevis can be seen. Entrance is free!
Back at the Stationsplein you will find the almost four-meter-high bronze statue Moments Contained (2023) by the British artist Thomas J Price. This work depicts a young woman and raises questions about identity and representation. Her stoic attitude seems confident, but her knuckles clenched in her pockets show suppressed tension.
From the station, the route runs along the Westersingel, where you will encounter various outdoor artworks on the right side of the water. Below is a selection that you don't want to miss!
An impressive mural of rapper Winne, painted by Judith de Leeuw. The mural is eight stories high and a tribute to the artist and his connection with Rotterdam.
A resistance monument by Hubert van Lith, which symbolises the courage and resilience of Rotterdammers during the war.
An inspiring text by Job Koelewijn, visible in air bubbles in the water, symbolizing perseverance.
A series of special sculptures, such as: The Braid (2021), Untitled (1999) and La Grande Musicienne (1963).
Did you follow the Westersingel and spot all the artworks? Then you have arrived at Eendrachtsplein! Here you will soon come face to face with Santa Claus, a controversial statue that we in Rotterdam also call 'Kabouter Buttplug'. This statue symbolizes the consumer society and has become a Rotterdam icon.
Time to go inside! Follow your walking route to Witte de Withstraat. Here you will find Kunstinstituut Melly, where five solo exhibitions under the title First Double 1 & 2, with artists such as Cihad Caner and Sara Sejin Chang, plus the group exhibition Pickup Notes, can be seen. Good to know: a ticket is required for access to these exhibitions.
You also don't want to miss Showroom MAMA. The playful exhibition 'Treat with Care while Aging' is all about identity and transformation, with work by Justin Croes, Cem Altinöz and Cloe Blansjaar. A ticket for this costs €2 and is free for everyone under the age of 18!
Finally, we recommend The Usual, for a well-deserved coffee break. At The Usual you will discover Becoming by Studio Sina Steiner – colourful, playful sculptures in clay and neon light. Entrance is free!
Not done walking yet? Then visit the Pieter Zwart Institute, De Doelen, WTC Art Gallery, Museum Park (Boijmans, Kunsthal, Nieuwe Instituut, Chabot Museum), or go shopping in the Koopgoot, to the theater or the cinema! There is plenty to do in #RC.
