The eleventh edition of the Circusstad Festival will take place in Rotterdam from May 1 to 5! This year with the theme 'Powerful women's circus', in which more than half of the more than a hundred circus artists are women.
The leading circus theater festival in the Netherlands attracted around 37,500 visitors last year. Once again this year, beautiful performances await you on the Schouwburgplein, in Theater Rotterdam, the Doelen and the Luxor Theater.
With so many talented women, it promises to be a powerful women's circus. Artistic director Menno van Dyke says that women are often less represented at contemporary circus festivals. Van Dyke: "Circusstad is turning this around by presenting a large majority of female artists this year with performances that are directed by women and that address feminist themes."
A good example is 'Raven' by the Berlin trio Still Hungry. The challenges of modern motherhood are central to this exciting and humorous performance. The ladies of Aloft from Chicago also master the feminine 'touch', an unmissable highlight for the whole family and a particularly innovative and magical circus experience.
Leading lady Diana Rodrigues will also perform with her own production in one of the tents on the Schouwburgplein with two crazy guitarists in Circ'Olé.
The Circustad Gala is back! Circusstad Festival proudly presents the second edition of this special circus evening on May 3. At the intersection of tradition and modernity, they present the heroes of contemporary circus theater for one evening on Rotterdam's largest theater stage.
This means that the Circusstad Gala occupies a unique position. Nowhere else will you see innovative award-winning acts and scenes from the most beautiful contemporary circus performances together in one programme.
This year, Circusstad Festival will take place on Schouwburgplein and in the cultural institutions around it, such as Theater Rotterdam, de Doelen and Luxor Theater. There are also performances at the Maritime Museum and in the Laurenskerk.
There is no fence around Schouwburgplein. This means that everyone is welcome to come and have a snack or drink, take part in a circus workshop or buy tickets for the performances on site.
Will we see you there?
