Located in the heart of Rotterdam you will find the Markthal, an architectural masterpiece that is not only a feast for the eyes, but also a paradise for food lovers. It is the place where architecture and good food come together for a tasteful encounter.
This time I will take you on a tasty journey through the Markthal and recommend three favourite spots where I can regularly be found.
For the first stop we go to Portugal: Natamania, a cosy and colourful shop where mainly Portuguese sweets are available.
The cherry on top is of course the pastel de nata: the classic pastry with a crispy crust and a sweet custard filling. Perfectly crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. In fact, they are sold so often that they are actually always still warm. Combine them with a freshly brewed espresso for the ultimate Portuguese experience. This way you can be sure that you start the day well!
If you have a bigger appetite, it's better to go to the Duck Truck. This truck is equipped with a grill where the tastiest burgers are cooked! You don't just get a burger here, no, these are made from confit de canard: duck that has been pre-cooked in its own fat. His visit to the grill adds a crispy layer, after which he ends up on a soft brioche bun.
Then the moment to enjoy has arrived. The DuckBurger comes in different flavours. In addition to the classic with cheddar, you can also go for more challenging flavours, such as the DuckBurger Blue for the real cheese lover, with gorgonzola, or go on the Korean tour and have a burger with kimchi. You won't be disappointed.
If duck isn't really your thing, you can always decide to go for a chicken or beef burger, but hey, it's not called the Duck Truck for nothing, right?
Finally, I would like to introduce you to Uncle Wang. Uncle Wang comes from China and is a true top chef when it comes to dumplings. He prepares these pouches in all shapes and sizes and in different flavours.
Whether you choose steamed, fried, vegetarian or meat-filled dumplings, Uncle Wang's dumplings are the ideal snack. Be sure to try the Xiao Long Bao. These are nicely folded into a bag and filled with deliciously tender pork. Every dumpling is a small explosion of flavour.
The Markthal also has many more flavours to offer. You can eat there almost all around the world! This makes it not only a place to eat, but also to enjoy the rich flavours and get an impression of the cultural melting pot that Rotterdam has to offer.
