Something has struck me lately. It seems like there are more and more bakers involved in the art of making croissants. As far as I'm concerned, this is the perfect sandwich to start the day with.
I really enjoy the buttery taste of a good simple croissant, although a slice of cheese or a bit of jam can also be very tasty. You can actually go in any direction with it. In any case, you no longer have to go to Paris, because you will also find more and more good boulangers in Rotterdam. So here are some addresses in the city where you can get such a fantastic croissant!
The better spots are always a bit harder to find. This certainly applies to Krozant. There is actually nothing to see from the outside, but once you have entered the Groot Handelsgebouw and found your way to the parking garage, you will find the ultimate croissant mecca: Krozant. Typical Rotterdam, because let's face it: how many people do you know who actually still pronounce it in French?
At Krozant it's all about the croissant, or at least the dough. You can choose from many types. There are almond krozants, pistachio krozants, but also pains au chocolat. Consider having your krozant topped with somewhat unusual combinations. I personally love the (truffle) egg salad, but the krozant club is also very popular. You will also find other creative creations, such as the chicken sausage roll. A kind of pig in a blanket, but much better! Krozant also has delicious coffee from the Rotterdam Giraffe Coffee Roasters.
Just a little further, near another station, you will find Petit Jean. In the old Bergweg Station, which has now been converted into a food hall with a lot of other culinary delights, you will find this hip French-inspired bakery. You may have already known them when they were still in the Zoho Expo, but since the beginning of this year they have moved to their new location.
As soon as you see the display case, you know that they have everything on track at Petit Jean. In addition to the buttery croissants and airy chocolate rolls, you will also find an abundance of other goodies here. If you want to get a dessert after your breakfast, then you know you've come to the right place.
Wolly is located on the waterfront of Noordplein, a hip brunch shop with a great concept: the guilty croissant. This is a delicious combination of fine croissant dough with a varying filling. There are versions with amarena cherries, rose jelly or strawberries with whipped cream. Different versions are served all year round. I often think back with fond memories of the variant filled with pistachio cream. The guilty croissant currently on the menu is one with carrot cake.
Be sure to visit the next time a croissant party is hosted. During this special event you can try all the guilty croissants from the past period again in mini format. Very nice if you have always had trouble choosing, or if you want to have a tasting with friends. So keep a close eye on Wolly's schedule.
