Have you ever spotted them? There are three iconic displays on the Lijnbaan, each with its own creative interpretation. These showcases are an awesome reference to the fifties, when the Lijnbaan opened as the first car-free shopping area in the world.
At the time, the walking area was adorned with various displays with all kinds of beautiful products to entice customers to enter the shops. Eventually the displays disappeared from the streetscape of Lijnbaan. At the initiative of the property owners and shopkeepers of the Lijnbaan, the displays can be found on the Lijnbaan again.
Since last summer three of these iconic displays have been placed on the Lijnbaan again. The design is inspired by the original display cases from the 1950s, but the content is different. At the time, it was a kind of extra shop window in front of the shopkeepers, while they now show changing exhibitions to shoppers.
Each display has its own creative interpretation. The Lijnbaan is of course a real reconstruction icon, so one of the display cases tells about the street of the past, for example with old images from the city archive.
The other displays tell stories about the future of the city and attention is paid to the latest trends and the cultural activities in Rotterdam. There is something to admire for young and old.
During a shopping day in Rotterdam, stop for a moment and take a look at one of these iconic displays!
