On Monday, October 9, the Lijnbaan will celebrate its 70th anniversary as a popular shopping street. We will celebrate this anniversary on October 14 together with Stichting Jarige Job. Read more about it below!
During the anniversary, the entrepreneurs and shopkeepers of the Lijnbaan would like to draw attention to families where it is not self-evident to celebrate children's birthdays. That is why they have created a special programme in collaboration with Stichting Jarige Job.
On October 14, during a visit to the Lijnbaan, you will come across a life-size cake. Come by and take a cool photo. The cake is especially there for your selfie moment to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Lijnbaan!
And if you get hungry, don't worry. Delicious pastries are also distributed to the public and store staff. During your visit you will also encounter the Jarige Job mascot, and volunteers are present to tell you more about the mission of the Jarige Job Foundation.

When the Lijnbaan opened in 1953, the Lijnbaan was internationally seen as exceptionally modern. It was the very first shopping promenade in the Netherlands and even the first car-free street in Europe.
The Lijnbaan was built after the bombing of May 14, 1940. First, of course, a construction plan had to be drawn up, and the idea of the Lijnbaan soon came up. This was really seen as a daring idea at the time, because how could customers find the stores if cars were not allowed?
In 1948, the architectural firm Van den Broek en Bakema was commissioned to design this new shopping area. The Lijnbaan, the icon of the reconstruction and Europe's first car-free shopping street, has been officially recognized as a national monument since 2010 and is still an iconic part of our centre.
