Rotterdam has a new green oasis: the Maaskant Park. Or well, the park was already there, but it has recently become accessible to the public! A piece of nature, in the middle of the bustling centre.
Since May 18 2024, you can visit Maaskant Park in the heart of the city, in the courtyard of the Groot Handelsgebouw (GHG). A park named after Huig Maaskant, one of the architects of the monumental building.
The park is located on a former elevated loading and unloading street. Jamestown, owner of GHG, transformed the street last year into a park open only to tenants. As part of Jamestown's vision to make the building more accessible to all Rotterdam residents, the park is now open to everyone. A vision that is closely aligned with that of the municipality of Rotterdam. Greening is high on the agenda here, so that we enhance biodiversity and combat heat stress.
The park, which was designed by landscape architects from Blooming Buildings, is home to more than 500 different plant species, including the mahogany bush, the peacock and the prairie lily. The park also has a jeu de boules court and cosy seating areas.
Maaskant Park is located at Conradstraat 22 in Rotterdam. The park is open daily from April to November from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and during the other months from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
