In addition to all those skyscrapers, beautiful shopping streets and ultra-modern apartments, we should not forget the greenery. Parks are not only important for nature, but also for us as humans. Fortunately, greening the city is also on the agenda in Rotterdam. Plenty of places to relax, study, picnic or exercise.
A visit to Museumpark should not be missed during your time in Rotterdam. After your visit to the depot, be sure to take a walk to the park behind it, between the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Westzeedijk.
Next to the pond on the south side of the park there are lawns where you can sit with a rug. You will also find many trees and plants here. Museumplein functions as an open-air museum, so be sure to admire the works of art there.
Okay, it may not be a park, but it is a nice piece of greenery in the centre of Rotterdam. The Lijnbaan Plataan is a gigantic tree that was planted in 1851 (!). Because the Lijnbaan was not yet built at the time, they had to take the tree into account in the design, because removing such a beautiful piece of greenery is of course not an option.
Thanks to the enormous branches of the tree, this is a nice place to take a break from shopping in the shade. Buy a tasty snack and find a spot on the benches around the tree.
Next to the Laurenskerk and between Hoogstraat and Meent you will find Grotekerkplein. A beautiful green area, in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city. In this green spot you will regularly find nice concerts and people enjoying the sun. Wonderful to relax after a day of shopping!
The stately Schielandshuis is located directly behind the Coolsingel. Besides the fact that this 17th century building is a historical highlight in Rotterdam and therefore definitely worth a visit, it has a beautiful secret garden that is freely accessible.
We recommend to take a stroll through the garden for a small break. Find a nice spot and order something delicious to eat or drink in the Schielandshuis restaurant.
Finally, we have another hidden gem in Rotterdam Centre, namely the courtyard of the City Hall. It may not be a park, but it's definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a green spot in the city centre.
Thanks to the historic architectural style of the Town Hall and the beautifully maintained courtyard, this place is the ultimate oasis in the city centre. Our tip is to visit the garden in spring and summer, when the flowers and greenery on the walls are in full bloom.
