New autumn display on the Lijnbaan

Have you noticed them yet? De Lijnbaan showcases, with, for example, the Depot in the spotlight or the 'Wild Life' showcase? Good news! A third display has been added in which they give a glimpse of the past of the Lijnbaan.
De Lijnbaan staat symbool voor de wederopbouw van Rotterdam na het bombardement in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Waar stadsontwerpers probeerden het beeld van de oude stad te bewaren, was de Lijnbaan een stukje moderne architectuur geworden. Een nieuwe vormgeving voor de stad en het begin van het moderne Rotterdam zoals we die nu kennen.
Op 10 juli 1952 werd de eerste paal in de grond geslagen en op 9 oktober 1953 werd het Lijnbaancomplex geopend.
‘Rotterdam groeit tot een van de modernste steden van Europa en, naar ik hoop, tevens tot een van de mooiste. De Lijnbaan is een prachtige aanwinst in het hart van deze stad, een symbool van de samenwerking en een daad van wijder betekenis’.

The Lijnbaan symbolizes the reconstruction of Rotterdam after the bombing in the Second World War. Where city designers tried to preserve the image of the old city, the Lijnbaan had become a piece of modern architecture. A new design for the city and the beginning of modern Rotterdam as we know it today.
The first pile was driven into the ground on 10 July 1952 and the Lijnbaan complex was opened on 9 October 1953.

The exhibition in the Lijnbaan showcase is a journey back in time. The Rotterdam City Archives takes you to the Lijnbaan of the 1950s and 60s. Did you know that when the Lijnbaan opened, there were already 66 stores with beautiful shop windows?
The pedestrian shopping street was an immediate success and attracted audiences from far beyond Rotterdam. The Lijnbaan was a place where you wanted to be seen, shoppers dressed their best and walked past the shop windows.
