On September 23, the Groen (Green) Festival will take place on Schouwburgplein and in Theater Rotterdam. This event is completely dedicated to sustainability. From 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM there are various fun activities, art routes, lectures and green workshops. Don't forget to explore the sustainable market.
The festival aims to help visitors become more self-reliant, inspire, connect and create awareness. Entry is completely free, because sustainability should be accessible to everyone.
Founder Claudia Rosbergen has a great love for greenery and plants. But she noticed that many green activities in her neighbourhood were inaccessible to her because she is in a wheelchair. That is why she started the residents' initiative Green Day, which over the years grew into the Groen Festival.
The Groen Festival is therefore accessible to everyone. Interpreters are present at all activities and the location is wheelchair accessible. The Groen Festival works with a pay what you want ticket system. This way the festival remains financially accessible to everyone.
There are various workshops to follow during the festival. Consider a plant cutting workshop, a fermentation workshop or an indoor growing workshop. Learn more about houseplants during the STEK de Stadstuinwinkel workshop. Also nice: Floor Korte from Koffietijd, among others, gives a lecture about accessible gardening together with Claudia.
“Sustainability goes beyond plants,” says Claudia. That is why you can also follow a workshop during the festival to make your own detergent. The African Center also provides an African jewelry making workshop and you can follow a headscarf tying workshop at Dix Pression.
Crazy about art? The Oren en Ogen Te Kort Foundation has mapped out a fun art route especially for Groen Festival, which is suitable for people with sensory disabilities.
In addition, there is a wheelchair course at the Groen Festival, where wheelchair users show their best tricks. For people without wheelchairs, the course offers the opportunity to experience the obstacles that wheelchair users face on a daily basis.
