Chinese New Year is the most important of all traditional Chinese festivals. Unlike the Western calendar, Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar instead of the solar calendar. It falls on the second new moon after the solstice of December 21, which means that the celebration takes place every year somewhere between January 21 and February 20.
To celebrate this in Rotterdam, you have to go to the West-Kruiskade. This is the vibrant heart of the festival, where beautiful lanterns light up the street and a great programme await you.
On February 8, the big street celebration breaks loose on and around the West-Kruiskade, with a great programme for young and old. From 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the street is car-free and filled with cozy stalls. Spread over small stages, you can enjoy various performances.
One of the highlights is the traditional awakening ceremony, where the lion is brought to life. This ceremony stands for prosperity. In addition, there are stilt walkers, dragon dancers and musical performances that create a lively atmosphere. For children there are also fun workshops, such as kung fu and ceramics. In short, a day full of party and activities for everyone!
From January 30 to February 9, it's time for the best film festival there is: the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)! From 14 to 16 February 2025, it's time for the design fair OBJECT again! Here you will find a varied range of local and international artists, where you can not only view art, but also buy it.
This edition, the annual design festival will be held for the first time in the heart of Rotterdam, namely in the AIR building, also known as the iconic former V&D building, right next to the famous Koopgoot.
OBJECT is known for its dynamic character and unique, surprising locations. After several years in the monumental HAKA building, OBJECT will move to Rotterdam Centre in 2025. The new location, AIR, offers almost 10,000 square meters of light, transparent exhibition space, with a view of the city centre.
The impressive candlelight concerts return to Rotterdam in February. This series of original music concerts, created by Fever, make classical music more accessible to everyone. Expect classical music in a new guise, at a beautiful location with thousands of candles surrounding you and the musicians.
The Arminiuskerk is the location for a Bridgerton concert on 22 February. But the Laurenskerk also has a number of special concerts planned. For example, on 6 February you can go to "Coldplay meets Imagine Dragons" and on 20 February to "Queen vs. ABBA".
Have you always wanted to skate at night at the Rotterdam Ice Rink? You can! The ice rink will be open on Saturday 15 February from 23:00 to 07:00.
