Are you visiting Rotterdam on a Sunday? In this article you will find the perfect tips for a pleasant Sunday in Rotterdam. Read on!
In this article we provide a handy itinerary for a Sunday in Rotterdam, with several stops at breakfast places, lunch spots, and of course the most prominent sights of our city. Finally, we end the day with dinner at one of the restaurants in town. With a view! We recommend completing this route by bicycle or public transport.
If you come to Rotterdam from another city, there is a good chance that Rotterdam Central Station will be your very first stop. Here you are immediately at one of Rotterdam icons. And what is also special: Rotterdam Central Station is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year!
With its futuristic design, impressive canopy and smart use of space, the station not only attracts thousands of travellers every day, but also countless architecture enthusiasts from all over the world. So be sure to take the time to admire it properly. It is possible to have a bite to eat here, or travel straight to the city centre.
You can reach the centre in no time by tram (or bicycle). Here you start the day with a (quick) breakfast at the Sappi take-away bar. The location in the centre is located on the Binnenwegplein, right next to Beurs metro station.
Order healthy and fresh smoothies, juices, sandwiches and shots here. Everything is prepared fresh and quickly, so that you will be outside with your healthy breakfast and juice in no time. Ideal to continue straight to the next spot!
Sappi is open on Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. To make the most of your day, I recommend getting there right at 10am for a healthy juice and a tasty smoothie or sandwich.
Time to discover some unique highlights of Rotterdam! Explore the Coolsingel, Rotterdam's boulevard, which connects the Hofplein with the Leuvehaven and links the Meent to the Witte de Withstraat.
You will find WTC Rotterdam along the Coolsingel. This national monument is located at the top of the Koopgoot. You will immediately recognize it by the impressive entrance, with the wide stairs. The WTC is a vibrant place where the (inter)national business community comes together and where you will find various shops, eateries and other fun places. So be sure to take the time to discover some of these hotspots.
Would you like a (coffee) break? Then visit Brasserie Jules, a trendy hotspot with a French flair and a beautiful terrace. For a good dose of art and culture, you should definitely visit the Art Gallery. This place offers contemporary art and modern design, and admission is free. You will find the gallery in the WTC Rotterdam itself.
The Koopgoot in Rotterdam has eighty shops with over 60,000 square meters of shopping pleasure. In addition to the world-famous chains, there are great pop-up stores and nice gift shops.
Don't miss Urban Outfitters, H&M, Zara or Vanilia if you are looking for a new outfit. Lush is also difficult to skip, because this wonderfully smelling store draws you in in no time! Are you looking for an original gift? Then you certainly shouldn't miss KKEC. In this unique gift shop you will find everything in the field of art, cards and gifts.
And one last tip: The Goot! With the arrival of De Goot, the Koopgoot will have a new hotspot. A hotspot that is constantly changing, because the space is given a new purpose every quarter. Kicking off with a series of makers who have made their mark in the fashion world.
This new concept from De Goot puts entrepreneurship centre stage. Here entrepreneurs, artists, artists or crafts can experiment and show what they have to offer. It is a new introduction to the Koopgoot, so you always have a good reason to return!
Shopping on Sunday in Rotterdam Centre? Of course this is possible! In Rotterdam the shops are also open on Sundays. This means that you can come shopping in our city seven days a week. It is advisable to check the opening hours of your favorite store. Different opening hours apply on Sundays and most shops are open between 12:00 and 18:00.
After shopping it is time to admire Rotterdam highlights. Walk from the Koopgoot onto the Hoogstraat towards Blaak. Along the way, slip into Wijde Kerkstraat to admire the Grotekerkplein and Laurenskerk.
If you have extra time, have a drink in the beautiful bar of Motel One, with a beautiful view of the Laurenskerk. Then continue the route via Hoogstraat to arrive at the Markthal.
Once at Blaak, your eye will immediately fall on a number of real eyecatchers, such as the Markthal and Cube Houses. The Markthal was designed by Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, and it is a horseshoe-shaped structure covered with a massive glass facade. The entire building is more than 40 meters high and spans no less than 120 meters.
In addition to the outside, the inside of the Markthal also offers some remarkable things. The Markthal there has an area of more than 12,000 square metres and is decorated with a huge mural that spans the entire ceiling. The artwork is called the "Horn of Plenty" and contains bright, colourful images of fruits and vegetables, among other things.
Time for lunch? Then you are in the right place. The Markthal is also open on Sundays from 12:00 to 18:00 and there are plenty of treats to be had! There are two supermarkets here (Wah Nam Hong and Albert Heijn) and several food stalls.
Then it is time to admire the iconic Cube Houses. What makes this piece of architecture so special are its unusual shapes. It seems impossible to live in it, but nothing could be further from the truth. The cubes consist of 38 homes and 13 business cubes, where you can have fun with a little creativity and adaptability.
Time for the next Rotterdam icon! From Blaak you can walk or cycle to the Erasmus Bridge, or take the metro from Blaak to Leuvehaven and you will be there within ten minutes!
An indispensable element of the Rotterdam skyline is the Erasmus Bridge. With its elegant, graceful shape, this bridge resembles a swan, hence the nickname "The Swan".
Did you take photos from every possible angle? If you still have some energy left, take a walk across the bridge.
To top it all off, we recommend a visit to the Euromast. The best way to travel here is by Water Taxi! You can sail from Veerhaven Willemskade to Veerhaven Euromast within ten minutes. Did you cross the bridge? You can also take the Water Taxi from here.
Of course you have heard of the Euromast. From this famous lookout tower you have the best view of Rotterdam! End your day of exploring here with a relaxing high wine or dinner. While you enjoy a culinary experience, you can admire the skyline of Rotterdam from behind the high windows.
Whether you ultimately decide to eat at the Euromast or not, buy a ticket to the top anyway. After you have walked a complete circle on the viewing platform at a height of 100 and 112 meters, you can take a seat in the rotating Euroscoop that takes you up to 185 meters high. You don't have a higher vantage point in our city.
Enjoy your Sunday in Rotterdam!
